Mobile Greenhouse 'The Whitley'

Mobile Greenhouse

'The Whitley'
'The Whitley'

A larger cold frame than 'The Castle' model, this has been designed as a very practical addition for the serious gardener. More utilitarian in appearance, it is none-the-less just as attractive, with an Edwardian simplicity. Made with reclaimed period glass when available.

The simple frame has a specially shaped ridge which allows the two opening lids to be lifted off completely in moments, or left open in any position using the friction stays.

Although heavy, the whole frame can be moved around on it's 12" iron wheels, using the full width handle which folds down when not in use.

Another practical aspect of 'The Whitley' is that once the two lids have been removed the whole frame can be lifted off the base and used directly on the ground over plants, leaving the base to be used as a trolley or barrow.

Available in White, French Grey or Dark Green.

Length 59" - Including wheels and handle
Width 38" - Including wheels
Height 35"

Mobile Greenhouse 'The Castle'

'The Castle' Greenhouse
'The Castle' Greenhouse

This Mobile Greenhouse was designed by David Le Versha in the 1990s when the workshop was in Castle Hedingham, at the old Nunnery.

It was always intended as a fully functioning miniature greenhouse, with the appearance of a Victorian antique. Part of the unique design includes the special handles which when lifted press against the frame to enable the greenhouse to be moved around on the cast iron wheels. Generally, we age the wheels and leave them unpainted which contributes to the antique appearance. The wheels and axle are removable for access through a restricted space.

Each lid opens completely over to the opposite side allowing full access, or can be set open at any position on the friction stay.

The Glass is putty glazed as is traditional and painted in several coats.

There is a loose seed tray in the top half of the frame, which can be stencilled with your house or garden name.

The floor is loose boarded so can easily be replaced in future.

Length 56" - Including wheels and handle
Width  33" - Including wheels
Height 38"

Wire mesh daisy chairs with matching table, original design by David le Versha in 2007.

Used by Diarmuid Gavin in his Chelsea Flower Show garden and now to be re-launched at the Harrogate Flower Show 20-23 April 2017. Great Yorkshire Showground.

Le Versha Chairs

These four chair designs were made under licence in India for Anthropologie. They were a lighter version of the ones made in the workshop here. The genuine ones are now available again, with the option of added arms.

Cafe Chairs and Table
Cafe Chairs and Table

The table is based on an old French pattern, but the chairs are a new design by David. The popularity of the four chairs designed for Anthropologie led to this fifth pattern, which is similar though different enough to stand alone. Despite having only three legs, these chairs are surprisingly stable, as the feet are set wide apart. Well made and finished in an industrial powder coat gloss, or else hand painted and aged. Very suited to bright, vibrant colours, these have been hand-painted in lavender, although orange, yellow, lime green or purple would look amazing.

A Gothic garden seat.  Not a copy, but an original design by David le Versha. All originals from the workshop are signed and numbered. Beautifully made, riveted construction throughout - authentic 'period' detailing.

Unfortunately there are a number of inferior and illegal imitations of this seat on the market. These are of a clumsy and lightweight construction and arrive in this country in flat-pack form. However the easiest way to tell the difference is that the genuine article will always be signed/stamped 'Le Versha' followed by a serial number.

A seat made to fit around a tree, and in the shape of a cobweb.  The back is kept to a simple low upcurve so as not to detract from the web effect.  Made from a half-round profile steel stock and painted a light silvery blue-grey, this seat has a very elegant and unimposing air.

Planet Chair

Planet Chair

This is a brand new design, just about to go into low volume production.  Inspired by the skeletal designs of the early Space-age, the chair has a simple but elegant form, with no more structure than is required for function or interest. Initially the Planet chair will be finished in industrial powder-coat, probably in colours such as Light Aircraft Grey, which suits the design well, but any colour can be specified.

Wardian Case

A very unusual Wardian case for growing sensitive and rare plants like orchids and ferns.  All of the glass in this case was re-cut from nineteenth century sash windows, and has a beauty of it's own.  Access is by double doors to the front, or by the simple removal of the back panel from it's sprung clips.  Lined with zinc in the bottom, allowing for a good depth of growing medium, or for a collection of pots.  Old clay pots would look best, and we can usually supply these too.

Based on an old French design but larger than the original with a 34 inch diameter top, which tilts vertically when not in use. Available in any colour or with a patinated zinc, aluminium or copper top.

Sputnik Table Type One

Sputnik Table Zinc Top
Sputnik Table Zinc Top

Zinc top, patinated and polished.  Many colours and effects can be achieved on zinc sheet, from almost black to reds, purples and bluey greys. With aluminium, the tops are corroded and then polished back to a shine, leaving hundreds of tiny dark pits and spots, and can be made to look genuinely old.   Waxing them with a good product means these tables can be left outside, and will only improve in appearance with time.

Mediaeval candelabrum

Candelabrum
Candelabrum

The main stem is hexagonal in section, joined above centre in a gilded knop, and flared where it turns to a tapered round spike.  The tripod foot is wide and sturdy, and of simple, undecorated form, with slightly out-turned toes, as the original stands were made.  The main crown is composed of three individual sections which rest one upon the other, over the spike.  The drip trays are of hexagonal and square forms, again as original, and individually shaped free-hand with hammers.  The whole structure is carefully proportioned, and is very convincing.

Candelabrum Detail
Candelabrum Detail

An authentically detailed floor standing candelabrum in the style of the early sixteenth century.  It is entirely free-hand forged from old iron, some from early window casements, and riveted with individually made pins.  The colour is good, and there is trace gilding to the details, giving a very convincing impression of age.  It stands around seven feet tall, and carries twenty four candles, eight on prickets, and sixteen in sockets.  This work is sold, but a guide price would be around £2200.
